Major Actions Taken to Date

On July 20th, FHWA Administrator Victor Mendez visited the Eastern Avenue Bridge replacement project in Washington, D.C. The $10.6 million project is using $9.6 million in Recovery Act funding and a $1 million FHWA grant for innovative approaches to reduce congestion and improve safety during construction. When completed, the project will increase traffic safety in an area that has experienced numerous accidents in the recent years. The project will also improve access to communities on either side of I-295, improve pedestrian and bicycle access, as well as add green space to the area. á

On July 21, major construction work began on the Doyle Drive Replacement project's largest segment-the fourth of eight total contracts within the overall project. When completed in 2013, the project will replace San Franciscos 73-year-old Doyle Drive southwest of the Golden Gate Bridge, while making structural and seismic improvements to the Presidio Trust and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area nearby. The Recovery Act provides $129 million including $83 million in formula funds allocated toward the current tunnel excavation, and a $46 million Recovery Act-funded TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant. áFHWA Administrator Victor Mendez joined state and local officials southeast of the Golden Gate Bridge as excavation began on the first of four tunnels.á

On Thursday, July 22, Secretary Ray LaHood announced that DOT and the Illinois Department of transportation had finalized a $100 million ARRA grant agreement to begin work on projects to help reduce rail bottlenecks in the Chicago region. á

On Thursday, July 22 Secretary Ray LaHood announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation signed an agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation for $10 million in Recovery Act funds to extend HOV and bus lanes on U.S. 36 between Denver and Boulder, Colo.

Major Planned Actions

FAA anticipates July 31 completion of runway 9/27 rehabilitation and taxiway rehabilitation at Carson Airport in Carson City Nevada, a designated reliever for Reno/Tahoe International Airport. The two projects received a total of $9.6 million in Recovery Act airport grant funding.á

FAA anticipates an August 1 completion of runway 13L/31R rehabilitation at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, a large hub primary airport. The project received $7.4 million in Recovery Act airport grant funding. á
