JAY CASHMAN, INC.
The project is located in a remote area of the Everglades National Park near the southwestern tip of mainland Florida in the Cape Sable area, roughly 12 miles west of Flamingo, Florida. The objective of the Project is the construction of two (2) new dam structures located in East Cape Canal Extension and Homestead Canal, which is comprised of a combination steel sheet piling and an earthen plug, to stop the uncontrolled flow of seawater flushing into and out of the Everglades and compromising the upland natural resouces. The project also includes the demolition of the failed existing dam structures, the clearing and removal of mangroves within the canal and upland construction site area, and the planting of new plants upon completion of the backfill. Some of the fill material will be transported hydraulically due to the shallow depths at the East Cape canal entrance and approach to the Homestead site. Rip rap will be placed around the embankment to prevent scouring. New channel marker piles and mooring piles will be installed for recreational vessels, as well as an access gangway and ramp for passage over the dam. The on-site Project construction is limited to between October 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011 due to the crocodile nesting season.
