Pine Telephone Company’s broadband stimulus project was designed to trigger investment beyond the grant dollars. The project will make broadband service available to 7,815 households, many smaller and home-based businesses, of which Pine estimates approximately 76 are in the project area. Service offerings will vary from an entry level service tier of 1.0 Mbps up to 3 Mbps all at reasonable and affordable rates. Once construction of the project commences, Pine estimates completion in only 24 months, well shorter than the maximum allowed construction time. Pine will also track services available to businesses, residences and critical care communities. Pine expects a high initial number of broadband subscribers, as many of its dial up-customers should convert to the high-speed wireless broadband. Moreover, Pine expects that take rates will remain strong over the project period, with an estimated 3,222 subscribers at the end of five years. Upon completion, it is estimated the project will create a total of 12 additional positions at Pine, with approximately 10 of these positions being directly attributable to the grant. Additionally, the project will likely create additional jobs in communities supported by the project. This includes not only those involved with construction and operations, but those who will have employment in businesses as a direct result of having high-speed Internet access. This project will ignite the economic viability and vitality of the entire service area by not only driving job creation locally, but by enhancing the employability of local residents through access to education and job training via broadband.
