MAINE STATE LIBRARY


In Maine, where a majority of the population lives in rural areas, broadband access and videoconferencing services can be crucial for fostering economic development, expanding training opportunities, and providing support to community-serving organizations. The Maine State Library plans to upgrade public computer centers at as many as 107 public libraries statewide and increase the number of available broadband workstations by as much as 40 percent by deploying approximately 350 new workstations and upgrading an additional 150 for a total of 509 workstations. It also plans to enhance training opportunities by deploying 11 video conferencing regional hubs and three mobile computer labs to enable hands-on training in remote rural locations. The project plans to leverage the resources of three existing Maine State Library programs, which aim to improve employment-related services offered by libraries and make legal information and services more accessible to the public. The Maine Public Library Information Commons Project proposes to: Serve an additional 7,000 users per week, for a total of as many as 24,000 users served weekly. Utilize up to 120,000 hours of teacher- and librarian-led instruction to provide training for up to 120,000 residents yearly. Provide assistance to economically vulnerable groups, including the unemployed, elderly, and low income.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description Training is ongoing at libraries with library staff utilizing resources available through the Information Commons learning web portal. Hardware and Equipment: Video Equipment, desktops and laptops are in use at libraries. An issue with the content server was discovered and we are working with the University of Maine/Networkmaine to recover archives. New content is now being archived to a new server. Video conferencing equipment is being used independently by some libraries as well as for the Lawyers in Libraries Project. The March session on Renter Rights had to be cancelled due to snow but is rescheduled for April 2, 2013. LearningExpress Library with the Popular Software tutorials continues to be a popular resource used by libraries and career centers. Outreach Activities: The Maine State Library BTOP Project web portal, Information Commons, has been updated to promote the Lawyers in Libraries Project and will be updated and rebranded for our digital literacy initiatives to sustain efforts begun through this project. The Maine State Library staff traveled to 1 library and held one statewide webinar to share ideas about sustainability of digital literacy efforts beyond the BTOP grant. Information was provided at these forums about national efforts by Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Public Library Association (PLA) as well as the upcoming EveryoneOn.org program. Work continues on an event to celebrate the project accomplishments and to kick off new digital literacy efforts sometime in May 2013.
