NEW YORK, CITY OF
Low-income households and seniors in New York City tend to adopt broadband at less than half the rate of their counterparts in moderate and higher income households. The City of New York’s Connected Communities project proposes to upgrade and expand public computer centers in libraries, public housing facilities, recreation centers, senior centers, and community support organizations across the city, focusing on high-poverty areas. The project plans to serve vulnerable populations in these areas by establishing programs for digital literacy and multimedia training, providing public access to new and upgraded computers and assistive technology, creating after school programs, and providing test preparation and workforce education.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications continued program administration; reinforced compliance; updated the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) map and website; worked with partners on budgets/plans; finalized the BTOP TV program which will air on NYC LIFE in April; and organized an outreach event/tech expo that will take place at the Gracie Mansion on April 10th.
Brooklyn Public Library continued to offer access and training at 9 sites; implemented numerous community outreach efforts,including several job readiness trainings at area senior centers and juvenile facilities; and has tracked 6,572 computer sessions at the newly opened Information Commons.
Queens Borough Public Library continued to offer access and training at 11 sites; held outreach events; rolled out its marketing plan which includes bus ads,print and tv ads; and continued certification training at the BTOP sites.
New York Public Library continued to provide outreach and training at 32 sites and surrounding communities; launched its advertising campaign; hosted staff technology training; and continued roll-out for the technology refresh.
Department of Parks and Recreation continued to offer access and training in digital literacy, workforce development and multimedia at 11 sites; conducted outreach; and improved broadband at all program sites.
Department for the Aging/Older Adults Technology Services continued to offer training and access at 24 program sites; conducted outreach; had a Public Event for the Senior Planet Exploration Center on March 7th attended by staff, patrons and community officials; and continued programming and operations for the seniorplanet.org website.
New York City Housing Authority continued to provide training and access at 11 program sites, including training in digital literacy, job readiness and General Educational Development training; and utilized the mobile van to provide BTOP services in NYCHA communities. |
