NEW YORK, CITY OF
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) utilization of Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing (HPRP) funds directed to New York City is comprehensive and far-reaching. Through our award-winning Homebase program, DHS will use HPRP funds to augment and expand short- and medium-term financial assistance, housing relocation and stabilization services, as well as benefits advocacy and case management services to households who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including those experiencing risk of foreclosure. DHS will expand aftercare services to families exiting shelter with the Advantage rental assistance program. DHS will provide funds to expand anti-eviction legal services to meet the growing demand for shelter by adding new service slots for single adults, childless couples and targeted New Yorkers, such as individuals living with HIV/AIDS and the elderly. DHS will launch a public education campaign targeted to those most at risk of homelessness. In addition, DHS will invest in proven strategies that are reducing the number of homeless individuals living on the streets in New York City by funding short-term housing assistance and case management services to allow street homeless individuals to work with outreach teams in a safe environment as they move towards securing permanent housing. HPRP funding will support initiatives to rapidly re-house families and individuals. DHS will add critical case management services to our current relocation assistance program, through which mobile housing specialists work with shelter providers to rapidly re-house families in the community. DHS will also provide funding opportunities to our existing family shelter providers to enhance engagement services that will move families quickly from shelter to permanent housing. In addition DHS will fund housing inspection to expedite the placement of families into permanent housing.
