CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY AUXILIARY SERVICES, INC
The specific aims are to improve our RISE Program, increasing the pace of research training progress by: 1) updating the student data tracking system; and 2) by updating and increasing the utility of the program website. Programmatic aspects will be improved through: 3) introduction of an intense Biomedical Boot Camp on research techniques and instrumentation; and 4) improving student scientific writing skills.
The following progress has been made:
1)Updating the student tracking system.
The remaining issues surrounding the database have been resolved: 1) the University will make available to the RISE program the academic grades of its RISE participants at the end of each term;2) since the application to the RISE program will be on-line, the security concerns have been dealt with to the satisfaction of the University. We are ready to implement.
2)Updating Program Website.
The proposed updating of the program website has been completed. However implementation is behind schedule because of the required integration of the student tracking database. Compatibility issues have been resolved, but implementation is not yet complete.
3)Biomedical Boot Camp.
The Biomed Boot Camp for new RISE students was taught in the summer 2012 by Drs. Carlos Godinez and Claudia Molina. These lab-based skills courses have been very successful, and have been incorporated as regular features in the parent RISE training program. The Bridges to the Future effort on campus will institute a similar course for its new community college student participants.
4)Student scientific writing skills enhancement.
A full summer 2012 schedule of writing workshops was implemented as proposed, including preparation of student CVs, statement of purpose documents, timeline for preparing the next year?s documents; and mock fellowship application. The writing workshops will continue as regular part of RISE.
