SILVER STAR TELEPHONE COMPANY, INC.
The overall purpose of this award is to complete an 86- mile fiber optic project from Jackson through Moran and over Togwotee Pass. | Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
All project fiber and equipment has been placed and tested. The 86-mile fiber facilities construction project is complete! Service is available to all original 23 and 18 additionally approved community anchor institutes. Completion of this project is another example of the State of
Wyoming's advanced
technology capabilities, as
evidenced by the relocation of
private and public sector
facilities within the region and state-wide. Technology companies are attracted to the State's fiber optic infrastructure, abundant
electricity and a climate
conducive to heat-sensitive
operations centers. Silver Star is proud to have partnered with NTIA under the BTOP award program to create a
legacy of broadband communications facilities,
enabling the provision of
sophisticated, vastly improved
broadband services and
fostering a healthy economic diversity throughout the region. Certainly, the crowning achievement of this project is the completion of the statewide fiber optic ring, for the first time in State history, ensuring
uninterrupted services in the event of damage to facilities.
Completion of this project is
the culmination of two years'
work constructing fiber
broadband facilities through
some of the most remote and
difficult terrain in the United States. Construction crews faced steep inclines, hard bedrock and even frozen
ground conditions. These
daunting tasks were not,
however, obstacles, and Silver Star is pleased to
have completed the project
over six months ahead of
schedule. |

| Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale |
This project addresses statutory purposes of the BTOP, providing broadband access to unserved and underserved users, educational institutions, Federal, state, county and municipal agencies, and Federal and other public safety agencies. It will also stimulate demand for broadband services enabling economic growth and job creation, particularly in rural settings by enhancing the broadband network opportunities. This infrastructure project is particularly important because it completes key loops of broadband service in Wyoming so that if lines are cut or damaged, service continues without disruption (planned redundancy). Services in this case involve national security, safety, law enforcement along with support for schools, libraries, and a host of other customer categories. |
