Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER

The supplement allows us to perform experiments related to the first specific aim of the grant but which were not proposed originally. Our novel findings related to the linearity of central vestibular neuronal responses will be further developed using newly developed stimuli to understand better how our balance system handles very low signal intensities.

Project Title CENTRAL NEURONAL ACTIVITY IN VESTIBULAR COMPENSATION
Project Status Completed
Final Project Report Submitted Yes
Project Activities Description Medical Research, General/Other
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The purpose of the subaward was to describe signal processing in the vestibular nuclei. We have found that neurons in the vestibular system not only change their sensitivity based on the stimulus amplitude, but that this change in sensitivity results in a change in threshold. Changing thresholds with changing amplitude was found to occur by rapid adaptation. This research was accomplished using two employees and no new equipment. The output will be one or two papers in scientific journal describing these results.

Description of Jobs Created The University of Rochester created/retained a Laboratory Technician and Technical Associate.
