UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE
The goal of this program is to improve the quality of education to AAS nursing students at rural/remote, under-served sites. It will replace and upgrade antiquated video teleconferencing (vTC) equipment to benefit our nation's most geographically isolated and marginalized AAS nursing students, improving the quality and functionality of their daily vTC connection to nursing faculty in Anchorage and statewide. Funds will purchase advanced video systems that can share clinical simulation digitally across sites. Due to the expanded functionality of this new equipment, faculty anticipates it to be used more than the historic 300 hours per semester. This project will enable the School of Nursing to continue its outreach education, thus improving the volume of nurses trained in the regions and subsequently employed to provide culturally appropriate, quality care. The equipment opportunity refocuses the School of Nursing back to its main purpose of providing equal learning opportunities to all person within our state no matter their location.

This project is marked closed. HRSA had informed the PI that all funds were to be expended by May 2011. Expenditures were less than the award amount because of changes in the equipment specifications & prices. Both Statewide & UAA's IT departments were able to negotiate a better price than the original equipment quote. All required equipment has been purchased & paid for. All outreach sites are operational &functioning except one that is in the process of coming on-line. This program's goal to improve the quality of
education to Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Nursing
Students at rural/remote,
under-served sites across Alaska was achieved. The award supplied funding to replace & upgrade antiquated
teleconferencing (vTC) equipment to benefit our
nation's most geographically
isolated & marginalized AAS
Nursing Students. The quality & functionality of our Alaskan Nursing Students daily vTC connection to nursing faculty located in Anchorage & Statewide was improved including video systems that can share clinical simulation digitally across sites. Faculty anticipates this technology will be used more than the historic benchmark of 300 hours per semester. All the Laerdal AVS equipment was received & put into service. All the VC packages were received & put into service as well. Students from across Alaska are benefiting from the upgrades. The following equipment was purchased:
