Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY (THE)

The applicants appreciate the substantial disparities in cancer risk, screening, treatments and outcomes for ethnic and racial minorities. A major barrier to understanding the biological reasons, and the exogenous risk factors for cancer and cancer outcomes in minorities, is the availability of well-annotated biospecimens for laboratory studies. Thus, we also appreciate the need to enhance our infrastructure and coordination in order to better address cancer health disparities. This Administrative supplement will allow us to plan for a future BMaP application, expected in 2011. It will also catalyze work and research funding independent of a formal BMaP application.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description The Region 1 G/BMaP website has been designed, deployed and is routinely updated. Summit: The BMaP PI and Coor worked extensively with NCI CRCHD to plan and hold the 2010 GMaP Summit. The coordinator has completed the meeting report. Assessments/Surveys: Region 1 has continued to develop the RAD (Resources Assessment Database) through collecting additional data on biospecimens and other core elements for the electives as requested by NCI CRCHD. Communication: Region 1 G/BMaP Coordinators work closely on every task and meet routinely to discuss current and future projects and tasks. Region 1 also participated in the webinars sponsored by NCI CRCHD and disseminated information throughout the Region. Evaluation Committee: Region 1 Coordinators along with the Region 1 GMaP Evaluation Lead belong to the GMaP Evaluation Committee. Members participate in calls and provide input on the creation of data dictionaries, categorical classifications, and future data analysis. G/BMaP Projects: Regional participants who are focused on community engagement and translation developed a framework by which Regional community-based proposal submissions may be reviewed/pursued. The framework along with Venn diagram and matrix (MOUSE) data was utilized to select a community focused project (Patient Navigation) that allows for optimal Regional collaboration. The research question is: What is the role of patient navigation in health care education, social attitudes, and behavioral changes as related to CHDs? Proposals for the laboratory/clinical science project are still being developed. A separate proposal for a Region 1 BMaP project to create a unique, virtual, centralized multi-ethnic biorepository, and ensuring high-quality biospecimens are available for CHD research was submitted to NCI CRCHD. This project will allow researchers to become aware of the biospecimen resources available and propose collaborations through a searchable database.
