Conservation Treatment of the Robert Motherwell artwork entitled: New England Elegy(FA897) located in the JFK Federal Building in Boston, MA. The conservation work was originally to be performed in conjunction with installation of new windows. GSA has cancelled the installation of new windows at this time. Work has been assessed and is anticipated to be performed beginning July 9, 2012 at the government's convenience. The monumental mural (13"H x 15"8" W) is 11'4" off the floor. Currently the painting surface is compromised by very heavy ambient dust and grime. Multiple stains, drips and fingerprints are visible. A pronounced crack line is visible. Treatment will be documented in both written and photographic format. Page Conservation will reect rolling towers with wheels which will permit the mural to be cleaned in-situ. Appropriate aqueous agents on swabs will be utilized for cleaning accumulated dirt and grime. Drips, accretions, fingerprints and mismatched old retouching will be removed to the extent safely possible. Loose or flaking areas will be consolidated with appropriate adhesives. As needed, small damages or losses will be filled and inpainted as needed. Inpainting will match surrounding original. All work is executed in accordance with the Standards of Practice set forth by the American Institute for Conservation.
