REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, THE
The Colorado Learning and Disablities Research Center (CLDRC) consists of an Administrative Cores and Five Component Projects that focus on the identification, characterization, validation and amelioration of reading disabilities (RD) and ADHD, the two most prevalent and often co-morbid disorders of childhood. The present application seeks ARRA Administrative Supplement funds in order to capitalize on our recent findings so as to significantly advance and augment important specific aims approved in the last competitive review of the CLDRC. We propose to collect additional data on our sample, expand our analyses (both behavioral and genetic), and further program development for intervention. Specifically, ARRA Subproject I will provide a more complete understanding of the stability of RD and ADHD and age differences by retesting some CLDRC participants that were previously tested approximately 5 years earlier, and conducting longitudinal analyses to complement the approved specific aim for cross-sectional development analyses in CLDRC Project I. ARRA Subproject 2 builds on our recent finding that outcomes of genetic analyses of independent variance for word recognition and reading comprehension vary depending of the specific test used to assess reading comprehension, and will provide similar comparisons and analyses of other phenotypic measures including working memory, oral language , and word reading processes, complementing the specific aims to explore reading comprehension deficits in CLDRC Project II. ARRA Subproject 3 will advance our molecular genetic analyses with the latest DNA linkage and association analyses, complementing the specific aims for molecular-genetic analyses in CLDRC Project IV. ARRA Subproject 4 expands current work on program development, testing, and analyses for response to computer-based instruction for children with RD to complement the specific aims of CLDRC Project V that focus on response to instruction. All of the proposed research supported by ARRA funds will accelerate the achievement of previously approved specific aims, will enable additional analyses to augment those aims in ways that are consistent with peer-reviewed activities and aims approved within the parent grant, and will promote economic development.

As the first step in the DNA recollection process, letters were sent to over 750 individuals from over 400 families. We received an excellent rate of response, and the vast majority of families that were contacted responded by sending in a new DNA sample or by informing us that they no longer wish to participate in the study. By collecting these new DNA samples, we will be able to include over 250 additional families in our ongoing molecular genetic work. This will provide important gains in statistical power for molecular genetic analyses conducted to identify genetic risk factors for reading disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and related difficulties. This portion is complete w/minimal funds remaining. |
