UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE
This NSF award is for Shipboard Science Support Equipment aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp. This award includes a ship anti-roll stabilization system, repair and upgrades to the existing Caley CTD system and an up-grade to the existing starboard trawl winch render system to meet the new UNOLS RVOC Appendix A, Rope and Cable Safe Working Load Standards.
The proposed equipment will support scientific operations and data collection in the mid-Atlantic region. The upgrades to the starboard trawl winch and the Caley CTD system were developed from RVOC Research Vessel Safety Standards and three years of scientific shipboard operations. The science support equipment proposed herein will enhance the infrastructure, safety and comfort needed for research and education. The R/V Hugh R. Sharp is truly a ¿next-generation¿, shared-use science support facility. Funding the anti-roll stabilization system will provide the research community with the most modern and stable platform possible

The anti-roll stabilizer system award is a result of critical post cruise assessments from the science community and will improve habitability and the capabilities to stay on scientific transect lines in moderate seas. The stabilizer system was installed during the spring shipyard period at Lyon Shipyard, Norfolk, Virginia. The R/V Sharp was in Lyon Shipyard, in March and April, 2010 and installation was completed. The repair and upgrades of the Caley CTD system award was re-directed to the stabilizer project due to 2010 funding for repair of that system. The upgrade of the starboard trawl winch was completed and billed to the SSSE 2009. |

Bay Marine, a New England Naval Architect Firm has been contracted to prepare all drawing and complete the design and installation engineering for the stabilizer project. Their work has been completed and the vendor has been paid.
ABS was contracted to approve the design and installation of the stabilizer system.
Noise Control Engineering was contracted to evaluate the impact of the stabilizer system on the quiet characteristics of the ship.
Naiad provided the stabilizer system and delivered it to the shipyard in early April. Their charges have been paid.
Lyon Shipyard installed the stabilizer system and has been paid for their services.
Dynacon has completed the winch repairs and has been paid for those repairs. |
