Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

TRUSTEES OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK

This administrative supplement provides an opportunity for Dr. Manjunath Harlapur, a post-doctoral fellow, to receive high quality training in conducting patient-oriented translational research in the area of preventive cardiology. Dr. Harlapur?s research interest is in the translational sciences specifically in the area of cardiovascular disease (CVD) biomarkers. The primary aims of the proposed research are for Dr. Harlapur: (1) to be trained in epidemiologic research, (2) to acquire experience in the analysis of longitudinal data, (3) to be trained in relevant laboratory techniques applicable to conducting translational research, (4) to obtain research training in preventive cardiology, and (5) to refine his ability to articulate research ideas and disseminate findings. The proposed administrative supplement will allow Dr. Harlapur to obtain this research training within the context of the parent study (R01HL091099). The primary aims of the parent study are to determine the independent contributions of depression and cellular aging to the risk for incident CVD events. To accomplish these aims, leukocyte TL will be assayed in a population-based, prospective sample (1995 Nova Scotia Health Study, NSHS95) of 987 persons with documented absence of CVD, but with baseline assessment of traditional risk factors including depression status, and full capture of 10-year incident CVD events including mortality. The parent study offers an outstanding opportunity for Dr. Harlapur?s research training and for the aims of the administrative supplement to be met.

Project Title Cardiovascular Disease: Depression and Telomere Length - Administrative Supplement
Project Status Completed
Final Project Report Submitted Yes
Project Activities Description Medical Research, General/Other
Quarterly Activities/Project Description This supplement provided Dr. Harlapur an opportunity for training in patient-oriented translational research in preventive cardiology. His research interest is in the translational sciences; specifically, cardiovascular disease (CVD) biomarkers. The supplement aims were for him to: be trained in epidemiologic research; acquire experience in the analysis of longitudinal data; be trained in relevant laboratory techniques applicable to conducting translational research; obtain research training in preventive cardiology; and refine his ability to articulate research ideas and disseminate findings, all within the context of the parent study (R01HL091099). Primary aims of R01HL091099 are to determine the independent contributions of depression and cellular aging to the risk for incident CVD events by assaying leukocyte telomeres in a population-based prospective sample (1995 Nova Scotia Health Study, NSHS95). Dr. Harlapur received in-depth training from his mentor, Dr. Daichi Shimbo, in epidemiologic research, analysis of longitudinal data, translational research, preventive cardiology, and research dissemination. Dr. Harlapur worked closely with NSHS95 data with respect to laboratory assay of telomeres, covariates, and follow-up cardiovascular events. Telomere analysis has been completed on the samples from NSHS95, and the data are being cleaned for analyses. Dr. Harlapur has already performed descriptive analyses using baseline information in NSHS95. Dr. Harlapur co-authored several book chapters, multiple entries on an online Behavioral Medicine encyclopedia, and several abstracts that were presented at national meetings. Dr. Harlapur also co-authored a manuscript that was accepted at the International Journal of Cardiology. The study examined the beneficial effects of optimism on 10-year incident CV events in NSHS95. Overall, Dr. Harlapur successfully completed the aims of the supplement and has entered cardiology fellowship to be become an academic cardiologist.
