UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS SYSTEM
Title: Physiological Factors in Hyperthermia. Description: The focus of the supplemental research will be to use our newly commissioned small animal conformal radiation research system (SACRRS) to apply simultaneous conformal radiation therapy and thermal ablation. The rationale for this new focus is that it appears that oxygenation is maximally improved in the periphery of the tumor during thermal ablation. The proposed studies will be a direct extension of the ablation and radiation biology research already being supported by the parent grant aims 2 and 3. We are now able to combine high dose radiation, thermal ablation and carbogen breathing simultaneously using the SACRRD, recently designed and built in our department which was not available at the time of the parent grant?s funding. The open-structure conformal 3D-irradiation system will allow us to treatment plan and irradiate various volumes of interest (such as the peripheral volume/outer tumor layer in this case) while also applying thermal therapy.
