Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS

This project seeks to create a new employment opportunity in an active NIA parent grant. The parent grant is a research scientist training award (1K01AG031836-01A1) with a potentially important and ambitious research program on cost-related nonadherence (CRN). The administrative supplement grant would enhance the parent grant through the hire of a pre-doctoral student in the Clinical and Population Health Research graduate program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The ability to hire a pre-doctoral student would increase the productivity of the parent research program and expand the scope of the parent grant to include a training opportunity. The specific aims of the administrative supplement grant are: 1) to provide a pre-doctoral student with research training and experience; 2) to gain critical administrative and computer programming support to accelerate the original timeline of the parent grant.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description In the last quarter, this project has successfully accomplished several key components of the study aims. Under Aim 1: to provide a pre-doctoral student with research training and experience, Under Dr. Briesacher's mentorship, Mr. Chen has nearly completed his dissertation. His dissertation defense is scheduled for September 2011, and he has accepted a prestigious research position as Senior Associate at HealthCore, a subsidiary of Wellpoint, to begin October 2011. His dissertation is on the important methodological topic of instrumental variable analyses in comparative-effectiveness and prescription drug research. He is creating three papers from this research, one is under review and two will be submitted in the next few months. Under Aim 2: to gain critical administrative and computer programming support to accelerate the original timeline of the parent grant, Dr. Chen works 20 hours a week primarily providing SAS analysis support to the study PI, Dr. Becky Briesacher. As a result of this support Dr. Briesacher was able to accelerate the progress of the training component of her grant and she is in the process of submitting her first R01 for the October 5 2011 deadline. Dr. Briesacher proposes to conduct an in-depth longitudinal study of the effects of health insurance, drug coverage, out-of-pocket health care costs on the post-hospitalization experience of patients with acute coronary syndrome. The proposed study is an ancillary study to a newly-funded NHLBI parent study Transitions, Risks, and Actions in Coronary Events Center for Outcomes Research and Education (TRACE-CORE [PI: C. Kiefe, 1U01HL105268-01]). Dr. Briesacher is also awaiting the funding status of another R01 Changes in Cardiovascular Care and Outcomes in 8 Years after Medicare Part D [PI: S. Soumerai].
