Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

"The overall goal of the DERC is to promote diabetes research in clinical metabolism and nutrition. Scope of the Overall Project: This Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center (DERC) application was submitted under a P30 grant mechanism in response to a RFA: DK-06-014 by Dr. Lawrence Chan of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, and was funded by the NIH as P30-DK079638. The overall goal of the DERC is to promote diabetes research in clinical metabolism and nutrition. The center consists of an Administrative Core and five Biomedical Research Cores as well as a Pilot and Feasibility Program: Biomedical Research Core Laboratories: The DERC will support five state-of-the-art core laboratories that will provide services to DERC investigators and P/F projects. A. Microarray, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, B. Proteomics, C. Gene Vector, D. Mouse MRI and Metabolism Core and E. Clinical Translational Investigation. All the cores are housed at Baylor College of Medicine. All cores are running well and provide state-of-the-art services to 57 DERC investigators. Three of the Cores, the Proteomics, Gene Vector, and Mouse Metabolism Cores are the most used cores in the DERC at Baylor. Pilot and Feasibility Program: The DERC supports a pilot and feasibility (P/F) program to provide support for three types of investigators: (i) New investigators with no prior independent NIH or other federal funding, who are initiating projects in a diabetes-related area; (ii) Established investigators in diabetes-related research who wish to pursue an innovative or high-risk high-impact project in diabetes; and (iii) Established investigators in a nondiabetes research area who propose P/F projects in a diabetes-related area. This program has been designed to recruit new investigators to the field of diabetes research, entice established nondiabetes investigators to initiate diabetes-related research projects, and support investigators who propose innovative and high risk high-impact diabetes-related projects Anticipated contribution of the requested supplements: Supplemental funds awarded for the purchase of equipment will streamline and enhance the diabetic research support services of three Biomedical Research Core Laboratories of the DERC: (i) Proteomics Core, (ii) Gene Vector Core, and (iii) Mouse Metabolism Core. Funds were also awarded to support three additional Pilot and Feasibility Projects. Together they will speed up the tempo of diabetes research supported by the DERC. The P/F supplement will directly lead to the hiring of new personnel. The equipment supplement, by enhancing and facilitating research at Baylor College of Medicine, will also lead to increased hiring and spending that will contribute to stimulating the economy while we advance scientific discovery.
