This funding has purchased a state of the art rapid scan stopped flow spectrometer for use in biochemical research on the structure and function of the human enzymes Monoamine Oxidase A and Monoamine Oxidase B. These enzyme are know to be elevated in the human on aging and this increase result in the genesis of neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson's Disease (MAO B) and is thought to lead to the genesis of heart disease on aging (MAO A). This instrument will be an important resource to improve our research capabilities in the development of neuroprotectants and cardioprotectants for the ultimate treatment and prevention of the above age-related diseases.
