The Program will utilized 50% of the allocation to improve the compensation and benefits of Head Start personnel as listed in Section 640(a)(5): to ensure adequate compensation to attract and retain staff; to improve staff qualifications and assist with career development; to ensure quality outcomes for children and families; provide education and professional development and to meet professional standards under 648A(a)(I). The remaining 50% of these funds will he used to improve the physical environment of 20 sites where the program provides services. Also, this funding wiIl be utilized to increase the weeks of services in order to assist parents with ongoing needs for quality educational services through the summer months. The extension of these services also assists Head Start employees with continued employment.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description The activities described with the jobs created below have been ongoing. Also, we were able to extend the Head Start school year to 178 days (requirement for public schools) instead of the normal 160 day year (the Head Start requirement). The Program will utilized 50% of the allocation to improve the compensation and benefits of Head Start personnel as listed in Section 640(a)(5): to ensure adequate compensation to attract and retain staff; to improve staff qualifications and assist with career development; to ensure quality outcomes for children and families; provide education and professional development and to meet professional standards under 648A(a)(I). The remaining 50% of these funds will he used to improve the physical environment of 20 sites where the program provides services. Also, this funding wiIl be utilized to increase the weeks of services in order to assist parents with ongoing needs for quality educational services through the summer months. The extension of these services also assists Head Start employees with continued employment.In summary, with this ARRA funding we were able to: ? assist with staff career development by paying for higher education books or fees; ? assist with ensuring quality outcomes for children and families by assisting with career development; ? offer bi-lingual educational classes to any staff interested in participating ? extend the Head Start school year up to 178 days instead of the Head Start-mandated 160 days, and ? increase staff compensation packages by paying benefits for all full-time employees over the summer months while they were on unpaid leave. Head Start impacts the community by promoting the school readiness for low-income children and through the provision of comprehensive health, developmental and family services.
