Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

TRUSTEES OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK

The Columbia University Diabetes & Endocrinology Research Center integrates basic and translational diabetes research with existing institutional centers of excellence in obesity, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular biology to advance NIDDK?s core mission of improving the lives of people with diabetes. The DERC supports a broad range of activities to enhance diabetes-related research of many investigators based at Columbia University and neighboring institutions in NYC. The award of an administrative supplement has allowed us to complement and strengthen our existing activities in diabetes research, with the ultimate goals of accelerating the pace of discovery and facilitating the achievement of research goals by our scientific research base. Capital equipment purchases have been completed, and have resulted in our ability to hire additional technicians to operate and maintain the equipment. In addition, we have been able to expand the capacity of our Core Facilities and provide services to a larger number of faculty than we did in the past. We are completing the review process to award Pilot & Feasibility funds to support diabetes research. The executive committee of the Pilot Grant Program will meet next week to make funding decisions. We expect to make funds available to investigators before year's end. The award has strengthened the Columbia DERC and positioned it to pursue its core mission more effectively. Our administrative structure has ensured the rapid deployment of supplementary funds, extending the benefits of the Recovery Act to as a broad range of diabetes researchers as reasonably achievable.

Project Activities Description Medical Research, General/Other
Quarterly Activities/Project Description This ARRA award was used to supplement diabetes-related research activities to accelerate the pace of discovery and facilitate the transition from basic research to translational investigation, with the aim to improve prevention and treatment of diabetes, and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes comorbidities. The award has been used to expand the reach and strengthen the impact of projects funded through the Columbia DERC Pilot & Feasibility Program. Six ARRA P&F projects were funded, and are briefly summarized: Dr. Lin (Columbia School of Engineering) to devise a wearable glucose-sensing polymer to be used in a closed-loop system for continuous monitoring of plasma glucose levels. Dr. Laurel Mayer to conduct clinical studies of changes in brain function, as detected by functional MRI (fMRI), in response to food cues following treatment with anorexient agents. Purpose of this study is to develop an early screening procedure to vet in vivo the efficacy of anti-obesity medications. Dr. Small studies the mechanisms of hippocampal dysfunction that underlie the predisposition of patients with type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer Disease. By comparing hippocampal function during longitudinal studies in models of insulin-resistant diabetes, he will attempt to identify early correlates of AD progression that can be employed as biomarker as well as a rational target to discover new drugs. Dr. Demmer (Columbia Mailman School of Public Health) is using bacterial microarrays to identify patterns of flora associated with periodontal disease in patients with type 2 and identify disease outcomes associated with changes in buccal bacterial flora. Dr. Mendelsohn studies the role of retinoic acid and its receptor in the development, maintenance and function of pancreatic beta-cells. Dr. Zhang is studying whether dietary leucine supplementation can reversed aspects of the metabolic syndrome. The ARRA supplement expired 8/31/11, final report due 11/30/11.
