Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY INC

This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 11-5). With support from the Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities: Multiuser program (CRIF:MU), the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Illinois University (NIU) will upgrade and cyber-enhance a 500 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. It will be employed in various research projects such as: a) producing new and novel compounds containing cages of carbon and/or boron combined with a wide range of metals; b) developing novel synthetic small molecules as chemical tools for the study of cellular and physiological processes on the molecular level; c) studying organic synthetic methodologies and organic reaction mechanisms focused primarily on the chemistry of highly electrophilic intermediates, some of which are known as superelectrophiles; and d) applying synthetic chemistry to biological problems related to protein posttranslational modifications, particulerly protein tyrosine sulfation and protein tyrosine phosphorylation. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy is a powerful, essential tool in modern chemical research. NMR spectra enable researchers to study how molecules react and to identify reaction products and unstable reaction intermediates. Structural information, i.e., information on the connectivity of the atoms in molecules and materials is obtained from observing transitions between energy levels arising from the nuclear magnetic spin properties of atoms. The instruments will be used to support research projects of undergraduates and graduate students at NIU and train them in the use of state-of-the-art instrumentation. With NIU's partnerships and growing outreach to regional colleges (Rock Valley College, Waubonsee Community, Madison Area Technical College) the new equipment has the potential to impact a number of science and chemistry students beyond NIU.

Project Title Upgrade of a 500 MHz NMR Console
Project Status Completed
Final Project Report Submitted Yes
Project Activities Description Research and Development in the Social Sciences and Humanities
Quarterly Activities/Project Description A number of nuclei (29Si, 32S and 17O) with corresponding experiments (zgig, DEPT, etc) were set up according to the needs of different users. A focus was put on more specialized experiments including DOSY and STD spectroscopy. Additionally, a 1D NOE difference experiment was set up. Software installations have been carried out all of the labs and on most office computers. Most of those computers are now networked under the workgroup NIU_NMR. NMR data is centrally backed up in real time and stored on the server, which is also part of the group. This allows access to data from all workgroup computers. Students of advanced organic classes from Rock Valley College, Rockford, IL and Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL were able to come to NIU in Spring 2012. A number of experiments was demonstrated and students were able to run samples they had synthesized in the lab. These visits will be repeated during the next academic year. We also have set up 2 more visits from Illinois Valley Community College (Oglesby, IL) and Kishwaukee College (Malta, IL). A total of 34 papers has been published so far (with more in preparation, but not yet submitted) and numerous posters have used results from NMR experiments. Installation of software licenses on lab and office computers has freed up more time at the NMR instrumentation and thus further improved the ability of NIU faculty to use the NMR equipment for teaching and research purposes. Use of the instrumentation for undergraduate research as well as education has also increased since more time on the instruments is available.
