The research supported by this award will lead to a new generation of bright fluorescence imaging agents for detecting and tracking single RNA molecules in living cells. This will be accomplished by covalently attaching fluorescent dyes to a nanostructured DNA scaffold. The high efficiency with which these “nanotags” will absorb light will lead to exceptionally bright fluorescent signals, while the DNA structure will allow specific labeling of RNA targets. This technology will be used to improve our understanding of fundamental biological processes that are critical to human health.
