Quarterly Activities/Project Description This is a background historic reserach and geomorphological investigaion of measures under study for the Cedar River, Cedar Rapids, Iowa flood risk management feasibility study, Linn County, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The flood protection measures under study (project areas) are primarily borrows, floodwalls, levees, or berms within the city of Cedar Rapids and outlying areas of, all within Linn County, Iowa. Archival and historic research is necessary to document, identify, delineate, and interpret: past occupations, significant cultural resources (structure, building, archeological sites and deposits, objects, artifacts, features, and etc.); natural and made deposits, and areas of no, low, medium, and high potential to contact significant historic properties. Geomorphological research and sampling to reveal the potential for subsurface and buried historic properties and reconstruct and interpret the straigraphic sequences of covered or buried landforms: to supplement the archival and historic research and goals and provide a context for the past human occupations and settlement.

Description of Jobs Created Project Archeologist/Historian Position. This position requires a Masters Degree in Anthropology and an ability to reserach archival and hsitorical records, synthesize and organize the data in both narrative and database formats. Other tasks include developing a historic context identifying specific historic themes that may be reflected by archeological deposits, and identifying those locations which have the highest potential for containing intact archeological deposits that can aid in the development of our knowledge of the local history and supplement the existing historic records.
