Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, THE

The overarching goal of the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP) is to assess the genetic and environmental etiologies of individual differences in behavioral development. Toward this end, adoptive and nonadoptive probands and siblings have been tested almost yearly from birth through their early 20's. The proposed continuation of HD010333 will provide for a 10-year follow-up of 682 CAP probands and siblings, now in their early 30's, and the culmination of testing of participants from infancy through early adulthood. The primary objective of this competitive renewal of the CAP is to achieve a better understanding of the interplay among factors of childhood and adolescence which combine and interact to influence relevant outcomes of early adulthood, including those that may inform studies of later adult development, such as cognitive performance, cognitive change/decline, physical health, emotional well-being, career/job satisfaction, economic well-being, and interpersonal relationships. Specifically, we will assess adult outcomes of behavioral development, and factors that may mediate or moderate these outcomes. We will draw on our wide array of childhood measures to assess adult outcomes of child behavioral development, as well as mediating or moderating influences. Further, we will explore issues of genetic and environmental contributions to adulthood behaviors from a developmental perspective, and will examine gene-environment correlation and interaction. Thus, the continuation of HD-10333 will result in a landmark adoption study of behavioral development, spanning infancy through early adulthood, the magnitude and quality of which are unparalleled. PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: This unparalleled adoption study will contribute to a better understanding of the interplay among factors of childhood and adolescence which combine and interact to influence important outcomes of adulthood, including factors which contribute to physical and emotional health. An improved understanding of genetic and environmental influences, and how they interact with early life factors to affect adult health, may contribute to improved health and well-being as well as to better health education and services.

Project Activities Description Research & Public Policy Analysis
Quarterly Activities/Project Description Our primary objective is to understand better how factors of childhood and adolescence combine and interact to influence relevant outcomes of early adulthood, such as cognition, health, and well-being. All testing is complete and funds expended. The project is currently in a no-cost extension. Assessment We have completed assessment of our projected 273 subjects, including 114 adoptive probands, 20 siblings of adoptive probands, 112 nonadoptive control probands, and 27 siblings of control probands, and collected questionnaire data from 128 of their romantic partners. Thus, we have met our testing goal for the ARRA-funded project. Data analysis Data analyses continue to address the Specific Aims of the project. Some examples of current analyses include: • The impact of post-high school transitions (work, college) on stress and health care utilization and the moderating roles of temperament and social support (UCR, Reynolds, PI). • Parent-offspring analyses of the etiologies of longitudinal stability of cognitive ability at ages 7, 12, 16, 21, and 30. (CU Boulder, Wadsworth, PI). • Etiology of change in cognitive trajectories from adolescence to adulthood (UCR, Reynolds, PI). • BMI and physical activity/inactivity from middle childhood (age 7) into adulthood (age 30-35). (CU Boulder, Wadsworth, PI). • BMI trajectories as a function of stress, loneliness and physical activity/inactivity (UCR, Reynolds, PI). • Personality and substance experimentation, use and dependence from adolescence into adulthood (CU Boulder, Wadsworth, PI). • Associations between academic achievement and health from childhood into early adulthood (OSU, Petrill, PI). Collaborative efforts We continue our collaborative efforts with investigators world-wide to study the effects of puberty on psychological development, and with investigators at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, to study genetic and environmental influences on various aspects of behavioral development.
