The supplemental funds requested would be used to accelerate the tempo of scientific research on antibiotic resistance and more rapidly research the position where translational research is possible. The translation of this basic research into application will almost certainly result in the development of novel antimicrobials and/or novel therapeutic approaches for antibiotics. Further, it will provide direct stimulus to the economy by creating 2 new research positions, increasing the hours of one employee and permitting the retention of two current employees. One of the newly created positions requires skills in population genetic analysis, and we have successfully recruited the appropriate candidate to fill this position as soon as funds are available.
