Funds were requested as an administrative supplement using ARRA funds in order to ?accelerate the tempo of scientific research? by providing additional effort for the Project"BioCAT - Biophysics Collaborative Access Team" from NCRR with an emphasis on aims 1a ? Combined SAXS/ WAXS for improved throughput, 1e ?High throughput static SAXS modes with sample robot and micro-fluidics.?, and 2b ?Turbulent flow mixer for continuous flow, high time resolution studies?. Aims 1a, 1b and 1e are all aimed at making SAXS data collection on the BioCAT beamline 18ID more efficient as well to increase the information content of the individual measurements. Aim 2B has a different goal, namely making a new range of time scales of time resolved studies (down to ca. 100 microseconds) practical for a larger range of scientific problems than hitherto by reducing the sample requirements from the gram quantities needed now in the current configuration down to a few 10?s of milligrams. Prior to these developments, time resolved experiments could only be done on relatively inexpensive commercially available proteins and nucleic acids whereas the planned developments would allow kinetic studies of a much broader range of biomedically important samples. The goal is to make these capabilities available a year sooner than would have been possible without these supplemental funds.

ARRA funds were awarded as an administrative supplement to ?accelerate the tempo of scientific research? for the Project "BioCAT - Biophysics Collaborative Access Team" 5P41RR008630-14 from NCRR . Additional effort was recruited for aims 1a ? Combined SAXS/ WAXS for improved throughput, 1e ?High throughput static SAXS modes with sample robot and micro-fluidics.?, and 2b ?Turbulent flow mixer for continuous flow, high time resolution studies?. Aims 1a, 1b and 1e were all aimed at making SAXS data collection on the BioCAT beamline 18ID more efficient as well to increase the information content of the individual measurements. Aim 2B endeavors to make 100 microsecond time scale measurements practical for a larger range of scientific problems than hitherto. Work so far has yielded new CCD detector software required for SAXS studies (Wm. Lavender ?job retained) and new motor controller software to control the beamline. Dr. Rita Graceffa is continuing to vigorously pursue the turbulent flow mixer for continuous flow, high time resolution studies project. The sample robotics project has been completed (aim 1e). Ms. Chen Xue was hired as a software engineer Nov 1, 2010 and is still actively working on software infrastructure that will be used for Aims 1a, 1b and 1e, now being paid from the BioCAT main grant. Considerable progress has been made on implementing GDA, a new beamline control software environment that should be ready for deployment the first run of calendar 2012. |
