Project Activities Description Mental Disorders
Quarterly Activities/Project Description THE WORK IS FULLY COMPLETED. The objective of this project was to provide research training to undergraduate students interested in a research career in mental illness. During the first summer (2009), we trained two undergraduates, Mary Roth from Florida State University, and Esther Yim from Emory University. Ester Yim continued on to do her honors thesis in our lab, as a result of this summer supplement. During the second summer (2010), we trained Joshua Degastyne and Aurash Moaven. All four students have been trained in methods of primary neuron culture, immunofluorescence and Western Blot analysis. Their research has help to support the goals of the parent RO1 grant which are to characterize how brain synapses are impaired in a mouse model of fragile x syndrome, which is the most common inherited cause of mental retardation and autism. Esther Yim is a co-author on our recent publication in the Journal of Neuroscience (Gross et al, J. Neuroscience 2010).
