Quarterly Activities/Project Description The ARRA grant (3R01DK037021-24S2) has assisted us in replacing antiquated equipment with modern and more advanced equipment that allowed us to improve the accuracy of stereotaxic injections into the brain of transgenic mouse models to be studied in the parent grant, the processing of tissues for immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization analysis, and most importantly, to improve our ability to perform image analysis on brain tissue sections. Since we upgraded our equipment we have been able to increase the efficiency and throughput in the laboratory, while generating the highest quality images for quantitative analysis, an essential component of our work. We purchased the following equipment: Leica Angle Two Sterotaxic, Cunningham Mouse and Neonatal Rat Adaptor, Digital imaging system for Zeiss microscope from Micro Video Instruments (SPOT Camera and software; CY5 filter set; digital workstation), MacPro Computer 2.26, Micropipette puller, MLS Autoclave, SmartSpec Plus Spectrophotometer and Digital Midgard Precision Current Source. We have purchased the equipment from United States companies whereby helping to stimulate the economy. This supplement was specific to equipment and the total expenses came in just a bit under what we asked for. Since we weren't permitted to use the funds for anything other than that which was requested, there is a small balance and no more funds will be expended.
