Two Elk Energy Park Carbon Site Characterization Study. The objective of this Project is to conduct a characterization study of the south-central Powder River Basin for CO2 sequestration. The Project is the initial geologic characterization required to conduct a large volume commercial sequestration project as part of the proposed Two Elk Energy Park Carbon Project. This Project will improve understanding of injectivity, seal integrity, capacity, rate of dissolution and geochemical reaction, pressure buildup, potential vulnerability and on-going management in regionally significant groundwater resources and will promote commercialization of carbon sequestration proejcts, such as that currently being pursued by the Two Elk Energy Park Carbon Project. This Project will include exploration and analysis of formation waters to determine suitability for sequestration activities as required by the Underground Injection Control Program of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Additionally, the scope of work for this Project includes the analysis of existing data, data collection, drilling and completing a characterization well, modeling, risk assessment and mitigation, engagement activities, data integration and sharing with National Carbon Sequestration Database and Geographical Information System and Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships, development of best practices, planning and management, and program assessment.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description During the quarter, no new information was added to the central repository and project models. Data to date has resulted from the acquisition, reprocessing and quality control analysis of two additional seismic lines acquired with DOE approval, from information provided by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission with particular focus on the Hilight and surrounding oilfields, and from the collection and analysis of multiple individual well data bases, including on-site well information. Proposals, which were requested in late 2011, were received from drilling companies identified as having drilling rigs capabale of drilling to Pre-Cambrian basement. An initial notice of award was given to Patterson Drilling. A contract proposal was also received from Schlumberger Carbon Services for them to drill the deep characterization well, pending DOE approval. Schlumberger will assume responsibility for the drilling contractor and the overall completion of the well. Information was provided to DOE in response to its requests. The remaining funds will be deobligated.
