IOWA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
IOWA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK Bridging the Digital Divide for Iowa Communities project proposes to upgrade its existing 3,000-mile network to provide high speed internet points of presence in each county, while enabling a system upgrade for as many as 1,000 community anchor institutions statewide to high speed Ethernet service. IOWA COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK partnership with non-profit Iowa Health System will allow for a comprehensive statewide fiber network that serves public sector, private sector and non-profit entities. Bridging the Digital Divide for Iowa Communities proposes to:
Provide infrastructure enabling the Sac and Fox Tribe in central Iowa, which currently lacks broadband service altogether, to deploy internet access broadband service.
Connect to Broadband Technology Oportunities Program grant recipient Iowa Health System network to provide high-speed access to additional communities statewide while utilizing Iowa Health System long-haul connection to facilitate information sharing between Iowa healthcare facilities and access to Internet peering points in Chicago and Denver.
Enable Iowa Emergency Management to use advanced web-based emergency management applications and provide Iowa Department of Public Safety with reliable, statewide, high-speed connections to local law enforcement agencies and Public Safety Answering Points.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The Iowa Communications Network continued to make significant progress during the first quarter of 2013. The engineering staff is fully engaged in writing site specifications. At the end of the quarter, field installation and circuit migration teams had completed 1,118 sites representing more than 87% of total sites. This represents 97 percent of the installations of edge routers at end user sites scheduled for completion by December 31. Dark fiber and IRU installations are also on schedule to be largely completed by the end of the year. The program sub-recipient in Decorah has completed 47% of their project. They have received their fiber and are heavy into installation. The sub-recipient Sac & Fox tribe has completed fiber installations and are working on splicing connections to the homes. This project addresses four of the five Broadband Technologies Oportunities Program statutory purposes. Specifically it: (1) enhances broadband service offerings in underserved areas through fiber infrastructure. (2) improves opportunities for broadband education, awareness, training, access, equipment, and support to healthcare and other Community Access Infrastructure, through the support of advanced applications, provision of direct, dedicated connections to major markets in Chicago and Denver, and connections to Internet2 and National Lambda Rail via the partnership with Iowa Health Systems: (3) enhances broadband service offerings to public safety organizations; and (4) further economic growth and job creation in a rural state for high speed internet access infrastructure and its enabler and multiplier effect on Community Access Infrasturture, last mile providers and the general public. |
