NEW YORK, CITY OF
New York City’s (NYC's) transfer school students—students between the ages of 16-21 who have disengaged from high school and are not on track to graduate—face a significantly greater risk of poverty, unemployment, and other challenges in life. As part of an effort to help these students develop skills necessary for graduation and a successful transition to college or a career, the City of New York’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT), in partnership with the New York City Department of Education (DOE), proposes an aggressive outreach program to serve students and their families at 48 transfer high schools through computer training, refurbished computer equipment, and Internet access discounts. Students would receive computers and broadband access in the home after completing a 54-hour broadband training course, along with a 3-hour program for family members.

During the reporting quarter, the New York City Department of Education implemented the “Digital Literacies” course and DIG/IT web environment at 64 high schools. The 64 schools included 38 Transfer Schools, 12 Young Adult Borough Centers (YABCs), 9 schools participating in the Expanded Success Initiative (ESI), and 5 iLearnNYC lab sites. In partnership with CFY, the program delivered netbook computers and offered discounted broadband to 2,011 students during the quarter. In partnership with Teaching Matters, the program provided professional development on blended learning strategies (e.g., classroom facilitation, student coaching, technology skill development) on the web and in after-school workshops, as well as onsite coaching (e.g., lesson planning, modeling, and co-teaching). |
