| Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale |
The North Georgia Network's overriding goals are to stimulate economic growth and job creation in the region by providing improved access to--and stimulating demand for--broadband service by businesses and residents in an underserved area of the United States. These goals are directly aligned with these purposes of the Recovery Act: to preserve and create jobs and promote economic recovery; to assist those most impacted by the recession; and to provide investments needed to increase economic efficiency by spurring technological advances in science and health.
Specifically, the North Georgia Network is a proactive response to the rapid erosion of North Georgia's textile industry and overall manufacturing base, which has left this region of Appalachia without a solid economic foundation. The project will create jobs in the short-term and enable a new competitive, technology-based economy that will bring new, long-term opportunity to the region. Immediate applications advancing science and health will include support of distance learning and online coursework for North Georgia College & State University's nursing program and expansion of technology-driven medical programs that will make laboratory, imaging, monitoring and other critical ancillary medical services more accessible and affordable to rural residents.
