Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

PHILIPS ELECTRONICS NORTH AMERICA CORPORATION

Title: "Energy-Efficient and Comfortable Buildings through Multivariate Integrated Control (ECoMIC)". The objective of this project is to develop solutions that reduce energy consumption in new and existing commercial buildings while improving occupant comfort. This will be accomplished by exploiting the interdependencies among the multiple variables involved. The result will be a prototype building control system that will optimally set lighting and other energy-consuming devices to levels that balance energy consumption with occupant satisfaction.

Projects and Jobs Information
Project Title Energy-Efficient and Comfortable Buildings through Multivariate Integrated Control (ECoMIC)".
Project Status Less Than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences (except Biotechnology)
Quarterly Activities/Project Description In Phase 1, we will derive indices of energy usage and visual and thermal comfort in proper forms so that when optimized, the controlled systems together create the most comfortable environment with the least amount of energy. We will also develop models and algorithms for glare detection and prevention, and user preference learning. Furthermore we will develop scalable building-wide system architecture of sensors, actuators and controllers addressing interoperability, information flow, and link to building management systems. In Phase 2, we will simulate, evaluate, improve and refine the developed concepts. We will leverage existing simulation tools such as Energy Plus, Radiance and MATLAB, and available building and climate data. Furthermore, we will test and evaluate network performance and issues of latency, bandwidth and traffic for small and large scale systems, to prepare for implementation in the test-bed. In Phase 3, we will develop and implement a concept demonstrator, and measure its performance at selected site(s). We will use commercial off the shelf components as much as possible, and design and implement critical components as needed. Algorithms will be implemented as embedded software as well as running on computer. We will test reliability of the system, quantify energy savings and user satisfactions, and refine algorithms. In Phase 4, we will write a final report summarizing the findings
Jobs Created 0.00
Description of Jobs Created This grant will create desirable technical research jobs requiring an advanced degree in engineering. Most project participants will carry the title of Senior Member of the Research Staff or higher.
