| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The purpose of the program was to expand and enhance special education services to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education with an emphasis on retaining and creating jobs related to special education services. Arizona’s award description included the following suggestions for use of ARRA funding:
- Obtain the state-of-the-art assistive technology devices and provide training in their use to enhance access to the general curriculum for students with disabilities.
- Provide intensive district-wide professional development for special education and regular education teachers that focuses on scaling-up, through replication, proven and innovative evidence-based school-wide strategies in reading, math, writing and science, and positive behavioral supports to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Develop or expand the capacity to collect and use data to improve teaching and learning.
- Expand the availability and range of inclusive placement options for preschoolers with disabilities by developing the capacity of public and private preschool programs to serve these children.
- Hire transition coordinators to work with employers in the community to develop job placements for youths with disabilities.
Examples of activities conducted by LEAs include:
- Development of programs to serve low-incidence high needs students previously served in out-of-district placements to ensure students with disabilities are served in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
- Purchase of Assistive Technology devices to increase access to the general education curriculum.
- Hiring Transition Specialists to improve community options for transition planning
- Hiring Behavior Specialists and training in crisis intervention related to positive behavioral supports.
- Professional development for general education staff to increase success for students with disabilities in general education settings. |
