PENOBSCOT RIVER RESTORATION TRUST
This award will be used for on-the-ground river restoration activities (construction, engineering, and management) to remove the Great Works Dam, in Old Town, Maine. The dam is a critical barrier to fish passage on the largest watershed within Maine. Removing the dam is the first step in significantly improving access to nearly 1,000 miles of historic habitat for 11 species of migratory fish. Prior to removal, under this award, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust will develop final engineering design plans, and moderate a scientific working group comprised of interested organizations to ensure a thorough monitoring framework. The Trust will also sub-award funds to implement the monitoring framework determined by the working group. During the course of the award, supplemental funding was awarded to the Trust for the following: (1) activities necessary to address anticipated additional costs to remove Great Works Dam and an associated legacy dam to ensure safe, timely and effective fish passage at the site (2) engineering design, permitting, and management associated with collaboratively designing and constructing a water intake system to facilitate timely and effective removal of the dam in coordination with mill intake construction.

?Work this quarter was limited since we completed removal of Great Works Dam from the river in November 2012. We commited some effort to ongoing tasks related to the Old Town Water Pollution Control Facility outfall extension and disposition of wood from the demolished timber crib sections of the dam. We are making progress on the outcomes of these matters; work remaining will be performed this spring and summer on a schedule that remains consistent with the plan for Great Works Dam removal and the overall Penobscot River Restoration Project timeline. R.F. Jordan removed sediment from the Old Town Fuel and Fiber water intake structure in accordance with its contract with the Trust and in coordination with the Trust, the Project Engineer, NOAA and OTFF; divers documented absence of sediment present in the intake structure. Trust staff performed project management, site inspection and oversight, contract management and coordination throughout. Engineers performed construction oversight throughout. Pre-dam removal monitoring is complete with all reports and deliverable approved or in final review. The Trust is working with NOAA to compile data and options for dissemination. |
