| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
Initially, the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (ORSC) awarded $7.3 million in ARRA funding for contracts to 19 entities through a competitive process. These contracts began on September 1, 2009, and most concluded on September 30, 2010. The contracts were for a variety of VR services including specialized services to transition youth, mental health consumers, ex-offenders, as well as other populations. This also included a project specializing in self-employment as well as a few intake and orientation projects that are helping ORSC to reduce waiting lists.
A second competitive process to award additional ARRA funds was completed in summer 2010. Three new contracts were awarded totaling $800,000 to provide assistive technology and employment opportunities. These contracts began July 1, 2010 and concluded June 30, 2011.
A third competitive process for a statewide training, demonstration, and technical assistance project related to customized employment totaling $1.5 million was also awarded in July and extended through September 30, 2011. ORSC has also entered into a $2 million interagency collaboration with the Ohio Department of Development to establish microenterprise opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This project also extended through September 30, 2011. In addition, ORSC has hired 34 RSC consumers on an intermittent basis to provide peer support to individuals seeking services.
ORSC is also investing approximately $4 million in the purchase and implementation of a new Vocational Rehabilitation case management system that will allow the agency to serve consumers more efficiently and to enable counseling staff to invest more time in counseling consumers. This system will also improve our reporting capabilities.
More recently, RSC has awarded a contract, through a competitive process, to conduct outreach to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. This contract was for $250,000.
