| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The Department of Education, Bureau of specail Education, has used ARRA funds in a variety of ways. The award provided grants to 110 school districts. The LEAs have been able to install audio systems for students with hearing disability enabling them to understand the teacher when he/she is giving instructions and teaching the class. Ramps have been added so that students with physical disabilities can access the building. Additional professional development has been planned and implemented in order to assist teachers and other professionals in understanding each students’ potential and what tools to use in order to maintain a special needs student in a regular classroom environment. Some of the trainings include but not limited to: Crisis Prevention Intervention, Positive Behavior Programs, in-service for Autism, improving timely evaluations, appropriate identification, better IEP development and placement decision-making practices, and math, reading and language interventions. The purchasing and installation of Special desks, interactive smart boards and white boards, computers, and other special electronic equipment to better support the learning of students with disabilities.
With the use of the electronic materials to aid the special needs students, these students are able to remain in a regular classroom environment to be instructed with their non-disabled peers.

The infratrucuture expenditures are helping the (LEAs) to ensure that children with disabilities have access to a free publice eduction, to meet each childs's unique needs by securing ramps, special furniture, auditory systems, adaptive equipment and other unique equipment to assist in hand/eye coordination. Purchase instructional equipment to support the development of preschool programs including intensive supports for students with low incidence handicapping conditions including mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorders as well as developmental delays and significant language impairments. In the context of classroom instruction, the word manipulative refers to items that students use to support hands-on learning. Manipulatives (such as markers, toothpicks, or coins) provide visible models that help students solve problems and develop concepts. The students can manipulate the items to increase their understanding and come to accurate conclusions. |
