REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, THE

TOTAL AND SPECTRAL IRRADIANCE SENSOR (TSIS) project: We will design, build, test, calibrate & deliver the TSIS instrument to Northrop Grumman Space Technology Corp., for inclusion on the National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS-C1), provided as NASA Government Furnished Instrument of the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The Total and Spectral Irradiance Sensor (TSIS) is designed to (1) continue collection of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) and (2) collect Solar Spectral Irradiance (SSI) data for the long-term climate record. The mission accomplishes these objectives by deploying two instruments, the Total Irradiance Monitor (TIM) and the Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM), that are integrated into a single sensor aboard a low earth orbit (LEO) spacecraft. The TIM collects high accuracy, high precision measurements of TSI using an active cavity radiometer that monitors changes in solar irradiance incident at the top of the Earth's atmosphere. The SIM collects high accuracy, high precision measurements of solar radiation as a function of wavelength using a prism spectrometer. Because the TIM and SIM are designed to operate nominally in a solar-viewing orientation they are mounted on the Thermal Pointing System (TPS), a gimbaled platform that accommodates targeting independent of the spacecraft;s nadir viewing attitude. The TSIS sensor also includes a Microprocessor Unit (MU), which distributes power from the spacecraft to the instruments, receives & processes instrument commands from the spacecraft, & receives & processes instrument telemetry & sends it to the spacecraft.
