FIVE COLLEGES INCORPORATED
This proposal seeks to acquire an RFID testbed. The instrumentation in the proposed testbed consists of several parts including conventional UHF RFID readers, conventional RFID tags, mounting assemblies to attach B33RFID readers, biological instrumentation for extending the testbed to insect monitoring, parts to create programmable RFID tags, and parts to test and calibrate the RFID testbed. The RFID testbed will allow us to perform fundamental cross-disciplinary cross-layered research into the design, implementation, and deployment of next-generation RFID technologies and applications.

This quarter we worked on parallel processing for real-time monitoring applications, including RFID. Extensive experiments were run to identify bottlenecks in big data systems (e.g. Hadoop) that cause significant latencies in producing final results. We are currently modeling the behavior of Hadoop to tune key system parameters to reduce the latency of monitoring results. Our work on intentional electromagnetic inference measures susceptibility of analog sensors to signal injection attacks by low-power emission of electromagnetic waveforms, and proposes defense mechanisms to reduce the risks. We found that medical devices immersed in a saline bath are susceptible to interference at a distance of 5cm. Our contribution to securing cardiac devices includes a novel defense mechanism that probes for forged pacing pulses inconsistent with the refractory period of cardiac tissue.
The grant provided funding to expand our capabilities in lightweight hardware identification and security. The PowerEdge T620 server was used for circuit level simulations of a hardware design with an introduced hardware Trojan, which resulted in a research paper. The server was used for circuit level simulations and machine learning attacks on a Physical Unclonable Function design, in an ongoing effort to evaluate their security.
Biologist Ross developed epigenetic methodology to genotype crickets to assess genetic variation at hierarchical spatial scales and to find markers to identify closely related individuals. Genetic variation within and among populations is being compared to geographic distance matrices to test different models of divergence (isolation by distance, step clinal, etc.) and to determine the relevant spatial scale of differentiation. This research will provide biological foundations by which efficacy of electronic tracking systems can be evaluated.
