Project Activities Description Elementary & Secondary Education
Quarterly Activities/Project Description All Cohort 1 schools in this program elected to implement the Transformation model for Year 1. Two Cohort 1 schools have switched to the Closure Model for Year 2. All Cohort 2 schools (not funded by ARRA) have chosen to implement the Transformation Model. Each school has undergone a change in leadership at the school by hiring a new principal and implemented other turn-around efforts required under the program. Individually, schools are continuing to build systems that will support sustainability of their school?s transformations. LEAs and school leadership teams have been trained in the new online web-based planning tool. First submission using this new tool was June 30, 2012. SEA is currently visiting each site again this year (2012-13) to find out the level of fidelity with which each is implementing/meeting their Transformation and Closure Model goals. The SEA also provides administrative coaches for each site to build capacity at the leadership level. This is the last year of funding for Cohort 1 schools though Cohort 2 schools will continue to recieve funding (non-ARRA funding) through the 2013-14 school year.

Description of Jobs Created Jobs created and retained under the School Improvement Grant program, primarily include school turnaround coaches and school leadership support. Coaches helped provide professional development, modeling, and technical assistance to the teachers and school leaders undertaking significant responsibilities in turning around low performing schools. Leadership support allows flexibility for principals to engage with teachers in teaching and learning processes as opposed to focusing time on building management, as well.
