LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, THE
Title: High Energy Density Laboratory Plasma, Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) Instrument Project
The Matter in Extreme Conditions Instrument (MECI) will observe matter at temperatures exceeding 10,000 Kelvin—nearly twice the temperature at the surface of the Sun—and at pressures 10 million times the earth's atmospheric pressure at sea-level, enabling unprecedented understanding of exotic states of matter. MECI will use the extremely powerful Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray beam to create and probe these states of "warm dense" and "hot dense" matter. The LCLS beam also provides a unique probe to study the behavior of matter in these conditions, using several optical techniques including spectroscopy, Thomson scattering, imaging and diffraction.
The instrument will emphasize versatility. To maximize the range of phenomena that can be created, MECI will provide very short pulse, high-peak-power laser beams and also high-energy, long-pulse laser beams, and the ability to manipulate the laser pulse energy, frequency and time profile to generate different states of matter.
The X-ray diagnostic capability of the LCLS in conjunction with these lasers will be unique to the MECI experiment. No existing facility can combine similar laser systems with the unprecedented peak brightness of the LCLS, giving MECI a unique window into highly excited states of matter.
