Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

THE VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY

VANTAGE (VANderbilt Technologies for Advanced Genomics) represents a logical next step in advancing a highly successful institutional policy of shared resource management coupled to an increasingly robust scientific capability for translational research and future healthcare. Our overarching goal in centralized organizational support for scientific core facilities management is to provide sound management of resources without impacting scientific vision, leadership, and oversight. As a result of this philosophy, we have been able to centralize services, put in place consistent quality control measures, and provide shared services to individual investigators that would be difficult for them to efficiently access individually. The VANTAGE proposal represents on-going, consistent execution of an institutional policy of core resource management and scientific development.

Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale VANTAGE represents a logical next step in advancing a highly successful institutional policy of shared resource management coupled to an increasingly robust scientific capability for translational research and future healthcare. Recognizing a need for access to high-throughput and sophisticated, state-of-the-art research services by multiple investigators, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) developed in 1998 principles of centralized organizational support for the management of scientific core facilities. Our overarching goal is to provide sound management of these resources without impacting scientific vision, leadership, & oversight. We have been able to centralize services, put in place consistent quality control measures, & provide shared services to individual investigators that would be difficult for them to efficiently access individually. The resultant economies of scale & efficiencies of operation have created institution-wide platforms for translation between basic science & clinical research, & have been one of the most important engines in propelling the growth of VUMC research to national prominence over the last decade. This rapid growth has also been fueled by institutional investments in basic & clinical pharmacology, human genetics, chemical biology, & informatics. A strategic planning effort in 2006 identified personalized health & healthcare as one of three institutional priorities for research investment and growth. This focus reflects both our strengths in basic & translational science as well as our vision for information technology-driven healthcare. The VANTAGE project represents a key next step in enabling collaboration, efficiencies of scale, & new science in this area. VUMC has made extensive institutional investments in six component core resources that will be physically co-located by the renovation, such as the Microarray Shared Resource, the DNA Sequencing Facility, the DNA Resources Core, & the Flow-Cytometry Core. Recognizing the potential for next generation sequencing, the institution invested in creation of the Genome Technology Core, whose mission is to make next-generation sequencing available to Vanderbilt investigators on an efficient, timely, & scientific collaborative basis. BioVU, the biobank that houses the Vanderbilt DNA Databank, is another resource developed by substantial institutional investment, & which will be located in VANTAGE space. Bio VU represents a key resource for scientific discovery & validation, as well as development of methods to incorporate markers, such as genomic variants or circulating small molecules, into the care of individual patients. We view this resource not simply as enabling, but as paradigm-shifting in our approach to translational science. Vanderbilt investigators who developed this resource are using the resource in Vanderbilt's participation in the NHGRI's Electronic MEdical Records and GEnomics (eMERGE) network examining the utility of DNA resources coupled to electronic health records. One of the main imperatives for the VANTAGE program is our very strong institutional commitment to making BioVU available to the Vanderbilt research community at large. Support for acquisition of ultra-high end robotics has been obtained through NCRR's high-end instrumentation program, & the VANTAGE renovation will provide a physical home for this very large instrument. Accordingly, we include in the VANTAGE program capabilities within the Flow Cytometry & Microarray Cores to use state-of-the-art approaches to fully extend our efforts in answering important scientific questions. As a further commitment to our vision that this new consolidated resource will propel science across the Medical Center, the region, & ultimately the nation. VANTAGE represents an important opportunity for us to extend our vision of basic & translational science as propelling improved healthcare.
