WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, THE

Washington University School of Medicine has been at the forefront of genome science since the inception of the field. There is currently over $81 million in annual grant funding to support major sequencing and genome analysis projects at The Genome Center and Center for Genome Sciences at Washington University that address fundamental questions of human health. These projects include sequencing of multiple, complete human genomes from tumor and normal tissues derived from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, lung adenocarcinoma, glioblastoma, serous cystadenocarcinoma, and squamous carcinoma, as well as genomic analysis of complex genetic traits and the human microbiome. Importantly, The Genome Center has embarked on a series of ambitious and unprecedented projects to sequence both normal and tumor genomes from 600 patients, that has the potential to transform diagnosis and treatment of cancer. These projects require enormous computational power and storage, and these essential needs have outstripped our current data center capacity. The scope of this project is to build a 15,238 building gross square feet (bgsf) data center expansion to support the data storage and processing requirements of our biomedical research enterprise, allowing us to accommodate the informatic research operations of The Genome Center and Center for Genome Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis. This expansion will allow us to support the 160 racks of high-density computer processing and storage needed by these groups without completely consuming the existing capacity Washington University School of Medicine facilities serving the broader range of the ever expanding current and future computational resource demands of the biomedical sciences. The growth in computational power and data storage requirements of the dedicated genomics and genome sciences applications are outstripping the shared resources that can be made available to those applications, putting at risk their future growth and scientific development
