The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is developing an ice imaging system, known as "IcePod," for use in measuring the surface and subsurface topography of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica for a grant awarded by the National Science Foundation. IcePod imaging sensors will be installed in a Common Science Support Pod externally mounted on New York Air National Guard (NYANG) LC-130 aircraft. IcePod will enable other scientific instruments to be used in the modular Common Science Support Pod, and will become a long-term research facility providing data to the science community. During this period, we continued to refine the IcePod instrumentation package in preparation for field testing in 2013. The Common Science Support Pod including IcePod sensors were delivered to Columbia University January 3, 2013. We also accepted delivery of cables harnesses and specialized mounts for the IcePod sensors. The IcePod sensor system was flight certified by the U.S. Air Force C-130 program office on NYANG LC-130 aircraft in Schenectady, NY, from January 28 - February 8. The IcePod was flown on three separate LC-130 flight test missions for a total of 8.7 flight hours and collected data from all sensors. We also plan follow-on IcePod testing March 18-22. On March 6, we participated in the Greenland Planning Conference Call, organized by the NYANG 109th Airlift Wing, to verify the flight schedule and coordinate logistics requirements for two IcePod deployments to Greenland in 2013. |
