Quarterly Activities/Project Description As of 3/31/13, the community outreach process is ongoing relative to bus stops and corridors; engineering and design work is underway for 13 key bus routes; the procurement process has begun; construction is completed for Silver Line Washington Street improvements; and the map upgrade program is in process. The primary construction contract for the key bus route work was advertised in March 2013; the ARRA-funded work will be competed in the summer.

Description of Jobs Created As of 3/31/13, engineering/design work and the procurement process is underway, construction work has been performed along the Washington Street corridor, and the map upgrade project is complete. The primary construction contract is in the process of being awarded. This grant will provide jobs for bus corridor improvements (e.g., benches, shelters, pavement repairs), installation of fare collection validators at bus terminals, manufacturing of CAD/AVL handheld computers for bus operation monitoring, roadway reconstruction work at bus terminals, and the fabrication and installation of system signage. This work will be performed through both contractors and in-house labor.

Infrastructure Purpose and Rationale This grant will be used to invest in public transportation by making bus route improvements (e.g., stop consolidation, curb extensions, traffic signal priority, benches, shelters and signage) to 13 of the MBTA's key bus routes and the Silver Line Washington Street bus rapid transit corridor; installing fare collection validators at bus terminals in order to reduce dwell times; deploying CAD/AVL technology that will provide Bus Operations personnel with location and operating characteristics of buses along a particular route in order to improve customer service levels; addressing pavement deterioration at bus terminals; and upgrading MBTA maps throughout the commuter rail, transit and bus system. As such, these projects will invest in transportation, environmental protection, and other infrastructure that will provide long-term economic benefits. The projects will also contribute toward creating jobs and promoting economic recovery.
