PIONEER VALLEY CHINESE IMMERSION CHARTER SCHOOL


This Community Facility Direct loan will enable the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School to expand our school to accommodate additional students. The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School operates a charter school serving the Pioneer Valley (Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin Counties). It is the only elementary or secondary Chinese immersion program in New England. The school's first academic year began in August of 2007. During the first fiscal year, the school offered a kindergarten and first grade. Plans call for adding one grade per year. For the fall of 2009, the applicant admitted two new classrooms of Kindergarten students. A middle school was added, with 19 students admitted into sixth grade. A total of 150 students were enrolled, and there is a lengthy waiting list of students who wish to enter both Kindergarten and first grade. In addition, the school has experienced exceptional community support as evidenced by the rapid growth in student enrollment.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School has completed the project. We are using 3 new classrooms, a cafateria/afterschool classroom, new office space, new gym equipment and our facilty has been brought into code compliance. The additional classrooms supported roughly 60 new students that entered our school in the fall of 2010.

Description of Jobs Created This quarter we had .1 FTE involved in Construction, which is the number we are using to report for jobs. Because we had new space we were able to admit two new cohorts of kindergarten students, which are supported by 6 full time staff. We also added a new cohort of middle school students supported by two new staff. Finally we added one additional special education staff member for a total of 9 new full time staff. This staff was on board for the last three months.
