SAVANNAH RIVER NUCLEAR SOLUTIONS LLC
In order to meet the needs of thermal management in parabolic trough solar applications, high temperature heat transfer fluids based on ionic liquid nanofluids will be investigated. During the three year period, IL nanofluids chemical properties will be characterized and investigated for corrosion and erosion behavior when in contact with common stainless steels at high temperatures. Heat transfer coefficients will be experimentally determined; while molecular dynamic simulations will be used to determine the behavior of the ionic liquid carrier when in contact with the nano-particles used increase the heat transfer coefficient of the media. The experimental and modeling data will be used to optimize the IL nanofluid properties and synthesize new materials that can successfully operate at higher temperatures. The ionic liquid nanofluids meet or exceed the following criteria that are necessary in concentrating solar power applications: freezing point below 80°C, 5 atm vapor pressure at high temperature, heat capacity between 2-5 J/gK, viscosity of 1 centipose, specific gravity of 0.7-1.7, and chemical compatibility with common stainless steels. This project is linked to project 2004420 which was closed during the April-June 2010 quarterly reporting period as funds from 2004420 were deobligated and moved to this project (2004430).
