OREGON HEALTH & SCIENCE UNIVERSITY

The overall goal of the OHSU HITECH Curriculum Development Center is to train key high-level and leadership professionals who will enable healthcare and public health organizations to achieve meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs). We will do this by adapting our existing Graduate Certificate and Master’s Degree programs, which are available both locally on our campus and remotely via distance learning, for the job roles specified by the ONC

Project Title OHSU HITECH GRADUATE CERTIFICATE AND MASTER'S DEGREE TRAINING PROGRAM
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Health Care Issues
Quarterly Activities/Project Description This award funds the education of 148 students over 3 yrs in OHSU’s Biomedical Informatics Graduate Program to meet the ongoing needs of an expanded clinical informatics workforce. Funds support tuition and fees for 135 students to enroll in and complete the OHSU online Graduate Certificate Program in Biomedical Informatics. Funds also enable 13 students to enroll in OHSU’s on-campus Master of Biomedical Informatics (MBI) Program, including a stipend and student health insurance. Students receiving ONC funding are required to choose among 6 workforce roles defined by ONC. OHSU has matriculated 175 total students to this program. Enrollment numbers exceed the original target of 148 due to attrition of matriculated students, primarily due to students underestimating the time commitment of the program. 114 students have successfully completed the program to date (103 Type I and 11 Type II). We anticipate 12 Type I and 1 Type II students will graduate at the end of spring qtr, and an addn’l 3 students in the summer or fall, bringing the grant total to 130 program graduates. We also have 12 students who withdrew from UBT funding and are currently self-funded. We anticipate these students will graduate before the end of the grant reporting period. That will bring our grand total to 138 graduates from the ONC Funded program. During this same quarter, we have also graduated 7 certificate and 5 master’s students from our self-funded program, bringing our total self-funded graduates during the UBT grant period to 112, thus making a substantial commitment to expanding the workforce outside the ONC-funded program. This quarter, we were awarded a no-cost extension through Sep-13 that will enable us to continue working to get students who have not graduated to do so by the end of Dec-13. We also continue to be active in sustainability activities, such as have a presence at the HIMSS 13 in New Orleans in March and continuing with marketing activities for the program.
