LOS RIOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT
The Western Regional Consortium to Educate Information Technology Professionals is a consortium of 14 community colleges from Arizona, Nevada, California, and Hawaii whose purpose is to implement curricula designed by partnering universities in order to prepare HIT workforce in six identified ONC worker roles: 1: Practice Workflow/IT Management Specialists; 2) Clinician Practitioner/Consultants; 3) Implementation Support Specialists; 4) Implementation Managers; 5) Tech Support Staff; and 6) IT Trainers. The goal of these worker/consultants is to provide well-prepared workforce to health care providers enabling these entities to achieve "meaningful use of EHR systems". Each member college is to achieve the ability to produce 150 workers per annum using an ONC approved set of curricula and to begin training by September 30, 2010. The expected number of workers is to meet or exceed 150/college/year for the two year period of the project.

Region B was awarded an additional No-cost extension changing the grant end date from April 1, 2013 to September 30, 2013. During the additional six months, further cohorts of students will be trained through Cosumnes River College, East Los Angeles College, and University of Hawaii Community Colleges. Maricopa Gateway College will be working to revise the curriculum to serve the needs of the Behavioral Health community including setting up an online offering and training two cohorts to verify the appropriateness of the revisions within the community. Once completed, plans are in place to offer training nationally with the support of a national behavioral health association.
Enrollment across the region has now exceeded 5,000 with 2,768 certificates completed. Of the original 14 colleges, three will no longer continue to offer training in the Health IT field. The other eleven will continue to offer the funded program, have incorporated portions of the curriculum into their existing Health IT courses, or have courses in development to be offered in the future. Some of the offerings will be in the not-for-credit arena geared towards incumbent workers through contract education while the balance will be for-credit offerings resulting in certificates.
